The Shillong Records Collection Centre ( SRCC ) was established on the 8th September 1974 by (Late) L. Gilbert Shullai and the centre is going to reach its 50th anniversary milestone on 8th September 2024. The centre is a one man’s collection and has become a storehouse of knowledge and information. Mr. L. Gilbert Shullai served as an employee of Assam Secretariat for 18 years from 1954 to 1972. After leaving the above service in 1972, Mr. Shullai happened to be the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. While holding the post of CEM he deeply realised the value of historically important records, information, documents & materials that have a credible bearing on good governance and building-up the future institutional capacities of the society.
After much thought, he relinquished the post of CEM on 14th June 1974 and voluntarily took up the noble but heavy task of collecting and preserving old documents, records, books and other materials relating to the past history of Hynñiewtrep people. So, SRCC came into existence on the 8th Sept 1974 at his residence at Riatsamthiah, Shillong. In January 1986, Mr. Shullai and his family shifted to Nongthymmai, Shillong. For the past many years, the SRCC has established for itself a prominent place for the study of and research into the history (both political & cultural) of the land and people of Hynñiewtrep. The centre is a house of knowledge that will continue to feed the wisdom-seekers and take the role of an instrument for academic production and pursuit. Additionally, the SRCC, besides serving as a library of historical materials, documents, photos, old newspapers, and magazines containing articles and write-ups, also houses materials, works, and books compiled or authored by Mr. Shullai.
Glimpses of the SRCC Exhibition held at St. Anthony's College on 7th September 2024, hosted by The Northeast India AV Archive, Department of Mass Media, St. Anthony's College.
